Here’s how to get set up in OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using an external drive. OS X has included Time Machine since OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Apart from keeping spares of every file, Time Machine maintains a record of how your system looked on any given day, so you can easily put everything back the way it was if something goes wrong.

Time Machine works with your Mac and an external drive to save important documents, photos, and system files regularly. One of the easiest ways of doing so is to use OS X’s built-in backup program, Time Machine. maybe at a later date for me.If you value your data-whether it’s some perfect photos you took last weekend, your entire music collection on iTunes, or your draft of the next great American novel-you must stay on top of regular system backup. I'm no sure how much a difference it'd make to mine.

Would be a pain if I suddenly found I had incompatible software and hardware. Think I'll hang on the SL for now, no rush. There is a charge for Lion and Mountain Lion on the Mac store, I'd already checked. Although I have altered all my sleep times etc. I've got Time Machine completely turned off on my macbook as I don't really store anything on it, so I don't think I should have any problems with that. I've downloaded the suggested TRIM software too, thanks. I have got a text file opening everytime I start up for some reason called f_001aa1 I've no idea what that's about?! I've tried to upload a screenshot but all my file uploads keep failing Mine is loading and opening the first app in about 10 seconds, so I'm more than happy with that! I've sorted myself with a torx screwdriver, so SSD is now properly in place. I didn't have to do anything here, as my MacBook never sleeps it just goes into standby when I close the lid (it's connected to power source pretty much 24/7 anyway, and rarely goes out of the house - when it does I shut it down, cos my battery is fubar anyway). It's advised to turn off sleep and hibernation when you have an SSD installed - something to do with the system writing the contents of the RAM to disk when it does.

Takes up data, and performs more read/writes to your SSD than is req (this can be done in the paid for version of Trim Enabler, or you can do it manually using Terminal - google "turn off local snapshots time machine"). This is when TM can't backup to it's dedicated drive, so it stores snapshots of the system on the internal drive, and backs them up later when connected to the dedicated TM drive. Turn off local snapshots in Time Machine. Have a look in the App Store to find out.

I haven't done the Mavericks update yet though, but I'd expect you could probably just go direct to that? I know Mavericks is a free upgrade - ML was £25 (I think) so I can download it again for free, since I paid for it already, but I don't know if you'll have to pay for it? Would be a bit odd if you did, considering it's superseded Mavericks is free. Can't remember how long it took, but after it was done, nothing had changed bar the OS. I simply downloaded ML from the App Store, did a Time Machine backup first, then ran the ML installer. The Trim Enabler app has that covered - you can turn on "check updates on boot" which also checks to make sure everything's running ok and TE is working.Īs for SL to ML - I made that jump didn't bother with Lion. Remember, any OS update, like going from SL to ML, or even the "point" updates, will turn off Trim support, so you'll need to re-activate it. I'm running the free one right now, but for £6 I'll probably buy it. That's a big improvement on the 2+ mins it was taking before on the original 5400rpm HDD!ĭefinitely get Trim Enabler installed (see It's free to download and use, with a $10 option for upgrade features. After that it starts up much faster - about 36 seconds from button to opening an app. I was getting a 45 second hang on the white screen while the MBP double checked for other startup disks, I'm guessing, before deciding the SSD was the correct (and only!) one to boot from. I also had to go to Sys Prefs > Startup Disk and click the SSD (even though it's the only one showing) and then click reboot for it to speed up the boot time. The Link Speed and Negotiated Link are same as mine - both 3Gbps. Didn't bother sticking anything in to stop the drive moving around in the meantime, mainly because it (the MBP) just sits on the table anyway, and the drive has no moving parts to worry about. Got one off ebay a few days later for a few pence, and swapped them over on Tuesday I think. I recently did the SSD upgrade to my MBP, and like you I forgot to get the little T6 torx screwdriver to swap the little pegs over with.
